The Step-Up Challenge
The Step-Up Challenge was a fitness and climate action challenge, Summer 2020, in partnership with Mackenzie Investments, GrandTrees, Alpine Canada and Freestyle Canada.
Due to COVID-19, many Spring 2020 school and community tree planting events were postponed. TreesCO2, Mackenzie Investments, GrandTrees, Alpine Canada and Freestyle Canada came together to lead an alternative tree planting initiative, The Step-Up Challenge #stepup4trees.
Participants climbed the equivalent height of a maple tree, Canada’s national tree, by traveling 150 stairs or 30m in elevation.
For every tree “climbed” 1 tree was planted in Southern Ontario, Spring 2021. 2,500 trees were “climbed” and 125 were awarded in the Grand Prize.
From July 6 to August 8, 2020 participants from Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Quebec, British Columbia, USA and more, stepped up for trees. Canadian Olympic and Professional Athletes led the participation and demonstrated athletes’ commitment to the environment.
